Here is mine and Erica's combined Second OB Report for 2010...
Credit really goes mostly to Erica, as the creativity here is about 97% hers!
OB Report II – January 30-March 19
And then the dawning horror rose,
Inexorable as churning wheels,
That O-Week fast was coming close,
And Women’s Week was on its heels!
Then what a whirl of heights and drops!
Of packing bags, of laying claim,
I visited the lolly shop,
So often that they knew my name
And interspersed, a frenzied clean,
To paint the annexe, match the green…
Catastrophe! It first stained pink!
Office Bearers’ tears did stain the sink
Until it dried to purple-mauve,
And WAC approved, it all was well,
Our working bees had lovely smells,
Then O-Week started. Welcome, hell.
But oh – the sweetest victory of all,
That bore us through the weary week,
Eighty people heard our call,
And four hundred plus signed on our sheet!
And on the Tuesday, joy did spring,
The Vagina Monologues did their thing,
And lo and behold, forty people came!
The largest event we’ve ever claimed!
And on O-Week’s heels,
At Yah-Yah’s Bar,
The Vagina Monologues,
Equalled ‘Huzzah’
For each speaker that graced the stage,
All students and of different age,
Spoke with passion, garnered rage,
And spun emotions like a mage
‘Til tears were falling midst the laughs,
And heart ache mixed with love and song,
And spirit soared with knowledge more,
That despite it all, women stood strong
So Week 1 started with good cheer,
Poster runs were made with smiles,
Thursdays in Black hailed our first years,
And we organised workshops all the while
Then Women’s Week! International Women’s Day!
We gave o’er two hundred flyers away,
And eighteen people came to hear our speaker,
Asked questions, enjoyed, stayed back to meet her
Almost twenty more showed up at two,
To swirl their hips and move in cue,
They learned to love their shape anew,
Their curves, their breasts, their bellies too.
The Reading Group then moved in place,
With laughs and tales they filled the Space,
Discussing periods, sex and clothes,
And querying all Feminism’s foes
And Girlzone blew our dreams sky high,
Packing the Room with laughs and smiles,
With colours, plans, and questions sly,
Discussions that lasted all the while
So popular it was to speak,
About the issues queers did face,
That they demanded every week,
We set aside a time and place!
And then, the follow up, hurrah!
With Catherine Schnell of Self Defence,
Eighteen women learnt to spar,
With bodies, minds, and common sense.

Things have cooled since, like embered fire,
Stoked by plans and by desire,
But underneath the flame sparks sun,
As we fill the days to come
As we meet WAC after WAC,
Tossing ideas forth and back,
For Safer Sex Week, speakers, Days,
For workshops with MUISS, not far away
For publicity and service too,
Maintaining a clean, safe Women’s Room,
Packed with coffee, milk and tea,
A place to go drive back the gloom
Of student poverty, lack of sleep,
We also helped with Welfare Week,
Shamelessly we self-promoted,
And forty-five sign-ups we did reap
And our search for free pads,
Yielded Cottons galore,
(Unfortunately,
We now need more!)
Preliminary discussion,
Has also begun,
On alternatives to tampons and pads,
(at least, the disposable ones!)
And Our Online Forum,
Is up and running,
With new posts and new members,
Slowly coming
And all these could not have been done,
Without the help of everyone!
Friyana, Allison, Clare and Ada,
Shirin, Saloni, Rebecca, and Maeva
Jess, Alice, Fia, the cast of VGM,
Thanks upon thanks should be heaped on them,
For extra hands and extra hearts,
Each exceeding their own part
So these two months have been a ride,
Of hard work, friendship, plans and fun,
But most of all, it’s opened eyes;
There’s far more yet that’s still to come…
And we can’t bloody wait.
