Hold tight!
This year, the Women’s Department is bringing you an absolute plethora of activities to enjoy and celebrate Women’s Week and International Women’s Day with!
INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY! – Monday 8th March
International Women’s Day was first declared in 1911 as a day to celebrate the achievements of feminists. Some of those victories we enjoy today include the ability to go to university, the ability to keep the money we earn (and earn that money in the first place!), and the realisation that if we work together, both women and men, we can change the state of inequality in the system.
So to celebrate the big one, we’ve got two events lined up and ready.
(i) Elena Schitova from Amnesty International, Victoria –
12-1pm in the H3 lecture theatre, Building 11 (The Menzies)
[Open to both women and men!]
A long-term anti-violence activist and executive director of the Women’s Alliance, Elena Schitova holds one of the primary female positions in Amnesty International, Victoria. Bring your friends, bring your lunch, and settle down to hear an amazing woman speak.
(ii) FREE Bellydancing Workshop!
2-3pm in the Conference Room, 1st floor of the Campus Centre (opposite Grain Express in the Airport Lounge)
[Women Only]
In the first of our free bellydancing workshops, Ingrid from Bellydance Kizmet is coming in to remind us of the beauty of our natural shape! If you’re unsure where the Conference Room is, either Emily-Kate or Erica will be in the Women’s Room beforehand to guide you there. Also, as spots will be limited by how much the Conference Room can hold, to avoid disappointment, please RSVP to Erica.Chan@adm.monash.edu.au as soon as possible, or at least by Friday March 5th. Hope to see you there!
TUESDAY, MARCH 9th
(i) Girlzone, 11am-12pm in the Women’s Room
[Women Only]
Run by the amazing Ada, one of the WAC members for this year, Girlzone is an hour for discussion and awareness about queer women and the issues they face. So come for great company and an insightful chat.
(ii) Women’s Reading Group, 1-2pm in the Women’s Room
[Women Only]
In our first Women’s Reading Group for the year, we will be looking at some general articles discussing women’s rights and what it means to be a woman. If you like comfy couches and fascinating discussion, come along!
WEDNESDAY, MARCH 10th
(i) Women’s Music Appreciation Group, 2pm in the MSA Meeting Room, 1st Floor Campus Centre, next to the Women's Room
