Well, it's the last week of exams and the summer is looming... I thought it might be nice to share some amazing articles and recommendations of science fiction and fantasy, specifically strong and amazing women in science fiction and fantasy, that have devoured my afternoon and inspired me to read further. In a world where the image of high fantasy and science fiction still typically brings to mind the damsel in distress, these articles and recommendations are absolutely amazing, and some of them surprisingly mainstream!
Well, enough blather from me... I'll let the articles and recommendations speak for themselves.
The Best Female Characters in Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror
A really, really interesting page where several different authors collate together their top favourite female characters from books, movies, etc. and explain what makes them so awesome. Highly recommended.
Female Characters in Fantasy Literature
An interesting blog post by Magemanda in her blog 'Floor to Ceiling Books' looking at stereotypes and other figures of women throughout fantasy literature, followed by some rather insightful comments too. She's also got a cool series of posts looking at fascinating female characters.
Rosie the Riveter
A cool series of different writers and readers talking about their 'Rosie the Riveter' - a female character they have found riveting in a book.
Formidable Female Protagonists in Science Fiction
A great series of posts (over 25!) about... you guessed it, formidable female protagonists in science fiction! There are some real stellar stories here that might just make up for some of the stereotypes we have to put up with sometimes. *looks at mainstream media and advertisements and glares*
Top 10 Mothers in Science Fiction and Fantasy
Just a short list with descriptions, but still interesting enough as intended - a homage to Mother's Day in an ass-kicking way .
Fantasy Novels with Strong Female Characters
Kick-Ass Sci-Fi with Kick-Ass Girls
Well, enough blather from me... I'll let the articles and recommendations speak for themselves.
