As an FYI, this week is Environment and Social Justice Week here at Monash Clayton! That means lots of great activities to participate in to show our support of the environment and social justice, with one of them being the Sewing Skillshare Workshop run by Emily Kate and open to both women and men! (8) Next MSA Women’s Department FREE Self Defence Workshop - Wednesday 21st April
Did you know? (1) – Dissent, the annual MSA Women’s Dept Publication! [Women Only]
Did you know that every year, the MSA Women’s Department produces a magazine called Dissent, where women can publish their articles, poetry, pictures, artwork, music scores, short stories and more? We are now open for submissions as well as looking for volunteers to assist with layout.
All submissions and enquiries can be sent to either Erica.Chan@adm.monash.edu.au or Emilykate.Cowan@adm.monash.edu.au and, if you would like a FREE copy of 2009’s edition of Dissent, just drop by the Women’s Office or pick one up from the Women’s Room, First Floor of
Campus Centre!
(2) WAC Meeting, Monday 29th of March, 10am-11am in the Women’s Room [Women Only]
The Women’s Affair’s Committee Meeting is where the Women’s Department does our administration and planning. If you want to make suggestions as to cool things to do this year, or general improvements, or even just to have your say or listen in, everyone is free to come along! This session we’ll be discussing the joint workshop we’ll be running with MUISS as well as International No Diet Day.
(3) Girlzone, Tuesday 30th of March, 11am-12pm in the Women’s Room [Women Only]
Girlzone is an hour for discussion and awareness about queer women and the issues they face. So come along for great company and an insightful chat!
(4) Women’s Reading Group, Tuesday 30th of March, 1-2pm in the Women’s Room [Women Only]
Come join the Women’s Reading Group for some amazing, insightful discussion! This week, we’ll be looking at a feminist fairytale, ‘The Silent Castle’, written by Rosemary Lake. There will be print outs on the day, but in the meantime you can read the story in full on our forum at:

So, if you like comfy couches and fascinating discussion, come along!
(5) Thursdays in Black, Thursday 1st of April, 9:30am-11am in the Women’s Room [Women Only]
Join us for morning tea in our weekly campaign Against Violence Against Women! Feel free to drop in at any time in this one and a half hour period for cookies, tea and coffee, and some great company.
(6) Sewing Skillshare Workshop, Thursday 1st of April, 11am-12pm, Activist Space [Open to both women and men]
Remember how wonderful Week 2 (International Women’s Day/Women’s Week) was? Well, Week 5 is the Environment and Social Justice Week. As a part of this week the Women’s Dept are putting on an equal empowerment Sewing Skillshare. from 11am-12pm in the Activist Space (next to the Women’s Office!). The threefold purpose of this event is to
(i) Break down gender stereotypes by empowering both men and women with the
know-how to sew on buttons and mend hems
(ii) To save students money by teaching each other how to make our clothes last longer and, of course,
(iii) Saving the environment by reducing the demand for new clothes and new materials!
So whether you’re a veteran couturiere or can’t tell one end of the needle from the other, grab a bunch of friends and come along for a practical, fun-filled event! Materials will be provided, however, feel free to bring along any clothes you have that could do with some TLC!
(7) MSA Women’s Department and Victorian Cross Campus Women’s Network Online Forum! [Open to both women and men]

(8) Next MSA Women’s Department FREE Self Defence Workshop - Wednesday 21st April
For those who have enjoyed Catherine Schnell’s recent self defence workshops, tell your friends about her next workshop on campus, to be held on Tuesday July 27th (Week Two of Second Semester) at 2pm. Until then, our next FREE self defence workshop will be taken by a new
instructor, Amelia Zarb, and will take place on Wednesday, 21st of April at 11am. To reserve your place in this workshop, simply contact Emilykate.Cowan@adm.monash.edu.au and she’ll take care of it from there!
